One of my favourite fruits is the pomegranate. These fruits are tricky to eat and often get very messy. I’ve learned an easy way of opening a pomegranate that is quick without leaving a big mess.
The first step is to make two cuts across the top of the fruit (the crown) about half a centimeter deep. The idea with these cuts is the separate the pomegranate into 4 equal parts. If you cut right through the fruit you will damage a bunch of the seeds and juice will get all over the place.
Next, pry the pomegranate into quarters along where it is cut. The fruit will break apart leaving all the seeds intact.
For the next step you need a big bowl and a wooden spoon. Cup the pomegranate along the seeds and firmly bat the skin of the fruit with the wooden spoon over the bowl. Most of the seeds will easily detach and fall into your hand or the bowl.
Once you are done this step, throw out the remaining material in your hand. If there are any loose white pieces in the bowl dispose of them.
Enjoy these seeds over salad, in a smoothie or as a delicious snack by themselves.
