Tulsi, also know as holy basil is commonly consumed as an herbal tea that helps your body respond to emotional and physical stress.
The leaves of the plant are dried to make this strong tasting tea. The flavour is very unique and impossible to describe properly – you will just have to try it 😉
Tulsi tea originated over 5,000 years ago in India and the tropical regions of Asia. In Hindi tulsi means “the incomparable one” and after reading on about its wide range of health benefits I’m sure you’ll understand why.
Tulsi is an adaptogen. An adaptogen is a non-toxic substance that brings body systems into balance and increases resilience.
Other health benefits of tulsi include:
- It’s loaded with antioxidants which protect you from free radicals. Antioxidants also support your memory, build up your immune system and slow the signs of aging.
- Tulsi provides relief from occasional stress.
- It enhances adrenal function – people who are stressed, anxious or using excessive stimulants (coffee, black tea etc.) run the risk of burning out their adrenals.
- Tulsi improves digestive health.
- It supports the health of your vision and respiratory system.
- It helps maintain your blood sugar balance.
- Tulsi can alleviate depression by modulating the central nervous system.
- It increases your metabolism.
- Tulsi helps your body detoxify.
- It contains anti-inflammatory fatty acids.
- It increases physical endurance.
There is some mixed evidence that tulsi may be toxic to embryos – so avoid this herb if you are pregnant. Be aware that it is also reported to have an anti-fertility effect.
There are very few foods or beverages that have an instant effect on how I feel immediately after consuming them – tulsi is an exception. If I’m feeling stressed and I sip on a mug of tulsi, a sense of calmness comes over me instantly. We all experience stressful days here and there, making this tea a must have for every pantry.
Tulsi tea is naturally caffeine-free and can be served hot or cold to all ages. It can also be purchased in capsule from but I recommend sticking with the tea – save the capsules for supplements like vitamin B12 and D.
