Genetically modified foods are made by inserting or deleting a plant’s genes (specific parts of the plant’s DNA). It can also involve artificial transferring of genes from a different organism to a plant. In the end this altered plant will express new desired characteristics.
Genetic modification has its advantages to farmers. Plants can be made to grow faster or have an immunity to herbicides.
A company called Monsanto has created genetically modified crops that are referred to as “Roundup Ready.” The plants of these crops are tolerant to the herbicide Roundup. So, farmers are able to dump Roundup right over the modified plants. The Roundup will kill any weeds or any other vegetation it touches without harming the crop itself. The first plant this technology was used with was soybeans. So when you’re eating the soy from these crops you’re not only getting a generous helping of herbicide but you’re also eating produce whose genetic material has been altered. To me this seems like a mad science experiment.
Genetically modified foods are new to the market, having only been introduced back in 1996. Their long term effects on humans are still to be determined.
A list of the most common genetically modified crops includes: soy, corn, cotton, tomatoes, potatoes, canola and rice. Currently, the only way to make sure you are not getting food that has been genetically modified is to buy organic. Organic food does not allow for any genetic modifications. So if you’re on a limited budget make sure and at least purchase the above items organically. Check out my previous post on understanding PLU coding which can help you avoid genetically modified foods.
Vote with your dollars and don’t support the production of genetically modified foods. Only time will tell what negative effects these foods are having on our health.
