Hempseeds are becoming a popular superfood among raw foodists and the health community in general. They have a mild nutty flavour and are easy for the body to digest.
Hempseeds are harvested from the Cannabis sativa plant and are usually sold shelled in health food stores. Hempseeds are a complete protein which make them a great addition to vegan and vegetarian diets.
They contain a wide variety of vitamins and minerals along with omega-6 and omega-3 essential fatty acids in the ideal ratio of 3:1. It is important to remember that essential fatty acids are not made by the human body and must be taken in through the diet. This is why they are referred to as “essential.” Hempseeds are also a great source of omega-9 fatty acids which have beautifying properties and act as a source of energy.
It is interesting that hempseeds contain chlorophyll (the green pigment found in plants) due to tiny green leaves that are inside each seed.
Do hempseeds contain THC (tetrahydrocannabinol)?
In some cases hempseeds do contain small amounts of THC but not enough to have psychoactive effects.
How can you incorporate hempseeds into your diet?
Hempseeds work well in smoothies. Start by adding a tablespoon or two to your favourite smoothie. In the future you can add more or less to your liking. Hempseeds will make your smoothie more “creamy.” They also taste great sprinkled over salads and can be blended into a salad dressing. Another great way to include hempseeds into your daily routine is in the form of a seed milk (recipe below).
Hempseed Milk
1 cup hempseeds
5 cups of filtered water
honey, dates, stevia or a sweetener of your choice as desired
Add all the above ingredients to your blender and blend away until smooth. At this point you use the hempseed milk as is (thick) or filter it through a nut milk bag for a smoother consistency. You can chill and enjoy hempseed milk on its own or it can be used as the base for a smoothie.
Hempseeds are a superfood that are delicious and easy to use. They provide numerous health benefits.
