Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic practice that serves two main purposes.
- 1. It promotes oral health:
- healthier gums
- whiter teeth
- fresher breath
- decreases gingivitis
- makes you less susceptible to dental cavities
2. It draws pathogenic bacteria and accumulated toxins through the tissues of the mouth, removing them from the body.
A more general type of healing occurs by removing these built up toxins from the body. Examples of health problems that can improve from this detoxification include migraine headaches, skin problems, chronic fatigue, diabetes and asthma.
How do I start oil pulling?
Oil pulling is very simple to do.
To start you will need one tablespoon of cold pressed, organic oil. My oil of choice is sesame with coconut oil being a close second. Other oils you can try include olive, sunflower and almond oil.
The best time to oil pull if first thing in the morning before consuming any food.
Begin by spooning the oil into your mouth. Swish it around slowly for 15-20 minutes while avoiding swallowing it. You will notice the oil will become thick and white as it draws in harmful bacteria and toxins through the tissues of your mouth. Make sure to spit the oil out right at the 20 minute mark to avoid having any of the toxins reabsorbed by your body.
I don’t recommend spitting the used oil down the sink because it may clog it over time. This is especially true if you’re using coconut oil which will solidify if it comes in contact with cold water.
When you’re finished rinse out your mouth with water or brush your teeth to get rid of any remaining residue.
*There’s some controversy over whether or not oil pulling is safe for people with metal dental fillings. There is talk of mercury being leached from these fillings. To be on the safe side I would avoid this procedure if you have any metal fillings.
Give oil pulling a try and see if it’s something you want to implement into your healthy lifestyle.
Share in the comments whether or not you’ve tried oil pulling. What was your experience like?
To your health!
Jesse
Whoa, that’s an awfully long time. I’d try it but I don’t know that I could do more than 10.
Start with 10 minutes Mandi – it will still be beneficial.
You can do it while showering and getting ready in the morning or while watching television – however you can fit it in π
Let me know how it turns out. GL π
Have you ever tried it Jesse? IF so, Was it effective?
Yes, I’ve tried it numerous times Brandon. I never had a specific issue but I did notice my teeth seemed whiter.
Give it a try and let me know what you think π
i will try to after my dry socket heals

I would love to try it but I have old fillings so maybe I better not. Wish I could get them all out. Who knew all those years ago that those fillings would be so bad for our bodies! Maybe some day if I win the lottery. lol
I would stay on the safe side and avoid oil pulling with metal fillings.
If you end up getting the fillings replaced make sure the dentist is experienced in the procedure and has a great reputation.
Good luck @facebook-554755848:disqus!
Dr. Jesse…is oil pulling okay for people with root canals and crowns? I have started and my gums feel better already. Thanks
Hey Kathy! Thanks for the question!
I wouldn’t worry about oil pulling with root canals or crowns. As long as there is no mercury in the work that was done then you have nothing to worry about.
I’m happy to hear oil pulling is working for you π
